Artificial grass has become a trend in homes and businesses alike thanks to its many advantages. Some of the most frequently highlighted benefits by our customers include water savings, easy maintenance, a consistently perfect appearance, and hypoallergenic properties.
Despite this, one question concerns everyone: does artificial grass burn when exposed to the sun and high summer temperatures? Below, we explain why this happens and how to prevent it.
Why does artificial grass get hot in summer?
Artificial turf is made with materials that heat up in the sun, just like most paving materials. We could say it doesn't get as hot as concrete, tiles, rocks, or sand. However, it is true that artificial surfaces get hotter than natural grass.
Depending on the materials and treatments applied to the artificial grass, its heating capacity will vary. Below are some recommendations to consider when choosing artificial grass for outdoor use.
Factors that cause overheating
Type of material and fiber height
When buying artificial flooring, it's essential to know the quality and the materials it's made from. At jardinvertical.es, most of our synthetic lawns are made of PE to ensure they are durable and soft underfoot. This material is treated to make it resistant to abrasion, UV rays, and pool chlorine.
The height of the fibers in an artificial carpet can also be an indicator of the temperature reached. In this case, choosing shorter models means less fiber surface area and, therefore, slightly lower temperatures.
Orientation and shade of the terrain
Just as we consider the orientation of a house when buying it, due to the number of hours of sunlight it will receive each day, the orientation also influences the installation of artificial flooring. The temperature reached by the synthetic green carpet will depend on its installation orientation.
Areas of synthetic grass that are shaded by natural or artificial light will have a more pleasant temperature.
Irrigation and soil moisture
Although watering artificial soil is not necessary, it is a practice that helps keep the grass fresher for longer during the summer months.
How to choose artificial grass that won't burn your feet?
All artificial grass reaches high temperatures in summer. However, some models have features that prevent the fibers from getting too hot.
The importance of the quality of artificial grass
The first thing you should look for is a quality artificial turf. The stitch count per square meter, DECITEX rating, drainage capacity, and manufacturing materials are fundamental factors in determining the quality of the turf. The higher the quality, the less it will heat up.
Polyethylene as an ideal material for artificial grass
Polyethylene is the best material for synthetic turf to achieve excellent quality. In the Artificial Turf , you'll discover a wide range of models made with high-quality polyethylene.

What can be done to prevent artificial turf from burning you?
If you notice that your artificial grass is getting hot and that this prevents you from using your garden or terrace normally, we recommend some actions that will reduce its temperature.
Add a layer of silica sand over the artificial meadow
In our case, we always recommend using silica sand when installing artificial turf. There are many advantages to silica sand, for example:
- It helps the fibers to have a more upright appearance.
- It facilitates the recovery of the grass filaments after being stepped on
- It helps prevent the artificial surface from reaching very high temperatures. By watering it, we lower the surface temperature, and thanks to the moisture retained by the sand, this coolness will last longer.

Irrigation and cooling systems
The recommended maintenance for artificial turf includes occasional watering.
While it is true that during the cold months it is recommended to water it to remove dirt, in summer this recommendation is also to control its temperature.
So much so that during the hottest months you can increase the number of times you water it. Keep in mind that you only need to water it gently, never soak it.
Place decorative elements that provide shade for the artificial turf
A good way to reduce the temperature of artificial grass is to install elements like awnings or umbrellas to shade during the hottest hours of the day. This will make that area much more pleasant for playing or relaxing.
Enjoy cool and comfortable artificial grass in summer
In conclusion, synthetic turf does heat up, but not to the scorching temperatures that can occur with other surfaces. Despite this, grass remains a perfect option for patios and gardens. There are many ways to achieve a comfortable temperature that improves your well-being and allows you to enjoy a cool, fresh artificial lawn.
