Decitex on artificial turf

Decitex: How to Measure Yarn Quality in Artificial Turf

Approximate reading time: 5 minutes, 4 seconds

As we've seen on several occasions, when buying artificial grass, you need to consider several technical characteristics. Understanding artificial grass terminology will help you make the best decision about which grass to choose.

If you're looking for artificial grass for your garden, patio, or terrace, you've probably come across the term "Dtex" or "Dctex." What does this term mean? Keep reading because we're going to explain everything you need to know about decitex.

Decitex is the unit of measurement used to describe the density of artificial turf fiber . It can also be defined as the mass in grams of 10,000 meters of yarn.

This terminology comes from the textile industry, where a direct numbering system is used to determine the relationship between the mass and length of the yarns. In the synthetic turf industry, the units of measurement used are tex, dtex (generally in Europe), and dernier (in America).

  • Tex: This is the unit used to measure the density of a fiber. It can be considered a measure of strength, as the higher the tex count, the stronger the yarn. In the case of artificial turf, the dtex, which is one- tenth of a tex. A tex is the mass in grams per 1,000 meters of fiber, and a dtex is per 10,000 meters of fiber.
  • Denier: This is the unit used to measure the density of a fiber. In this case, it is the mass in grams per 9,000 meters of fiber. This measurement is commonly used in the United States.

dtex could also be defined as the number of polymer fibers per denier (unit of measurement of yarn fineness) in a specific area of artificial turf.

Importance of decitex in artificial turf

Relationship with resistance and durability

Decitex is related to the resistance and durability of artificial turf. A higher decitex value indicates greater density and , therefore, greater resistance to foot traffic, burns, and wear. This translates to a longer lifespan for the synthetic turf.

However, it's important to note that artificial grass rolls with a high dtex rating tend to be heavier, more difficult to handle, and harder to install. This means a greater investment in both the product itself and the installation accessories.

To avoid these situations, it's essential to find the right balance based on the intended use of the artificial turf. If its primary function is decorative in a family garden and it won't withstand heavy foot traffic, a turf with a lower dtex rating can be chosen. However, if it's for decorative purposes at events or for sports use, a higher dtex rating is necessary to prevent damage to the fibers and ensure they remain upright.

Relationship with touch and appearance

The dtex is also closely related to the appearance and feel of the turf. A higher decitexindicates greater density and thicker fibers in the artificial grass. This means that the artificial grass has a less soft feel , but a more natural

Is decitex everything? Relationship with other characteristics

Although decitex is a key indicator of the durability and density of artificial turf, it is not the only important factor. The final quality of the turf also depends on:

  • Fiber height: the greater the height, the smoother the surface will be, but the resistance will be less.
  • The number of stitches per square meter: the higher the number of stitches, the greater the density.
  • The shape of the filament: affects the recovery of the foot and its natural appearance due to the shine that appears with the incidence of the sun.
  • The fiber material: determines the strength and durability of the synthetic turf.

Therefore, it is essential to assess the set of characteristics to choose the most suitable grass for each use.

Decitex guide for the use of artificial turf

So which Decitex should I choose ? The answer to this question depends on each person's  needs and preferences

For gardens and terraces

If you are going to install artificial grass in your garden, patio or terrace where traffic will be low or medium, ideally you should choose a product with a decitex between 7,000 and 10,000.

For playgrounds

In these areas, children play and run freely, so we must choose a more durable artificial turf that can withstand heavy traffic. Therefore, we recommend choosing artificial grass with a decitex rating between 11,000 and 13,000.

For decorative use

If the artificial grass won't be subject to foot traffic and is primarily for decorative purposes, then the dtex rating can be much lower. In this case, the synthetic grass doesn't need to be durable, so we can choose a finer model. Approximately between 5,000 and 7,000 decitex

For sports use

Artificial sports turf is usually designed specifically for each type of sport that you want to practice.

Practical examples

As we mentioned earlier, decitex is a measure related to mass and length. Therefore, the same dtex value can be achieved by varying the thickness and height of the artificial turf. For example, a model with a decitex of 12,000 means that approximately 10,000 linear meters of the product's filament weigh 12 grams.

The total decitex is calculated as the dtex value of a fiber multiplied by the number of fibers per stitch. Therefore, if a turf model has 8 fibers per stitch and the decitex of each fiber is 1,500, the total decitex of the artificial turf is 12,000. The correct way to express this is with two numbers separated by a slash. In this case, 12,000/8. The first number is the decitex, and the second number is the number of fibers per stitch.

Myths and truths about decitex

1. The decitex measures the resistance of the thread

Decitex measures the thickness or mass of yarn per unit length. It's true that a higher dtexindicates greater yarn strength. However, other factors also affect yarn strength, such as the manufacturing material and filament shape.

2. The higher the decitex, the higher the quality

A shoe with a low decitex rating doesn't necessarily mean it's of poor quality; it simply means its yarns are thin and lightweight. A lower decitex rating indicates lower density and less cushioning, but it doesn't necessarily mean poor quality. Quality depends on other factors, primarily related to the manufacturing process.

3. Always choose a high decitex

The choice of Decitex depends on the intended use of the artificial turf and the qualities . As we've seen, playgrounds and high-traffic areas require a higher Decitex rating than those used for decorative purposes. Therefore, the choice of Decitex will depend on the intended use.

4. dtex affects the texture of synthetic turf

It's true that artificial grass with a higher decitex has a denser texture and thicker, more resistant filaments. Those models with a lower decitex have a softer, lighter texture

Conclusion

In conclusion, decitex is a unit of measurement for the density of synthetic turf fibers. This makes it a good indicator of the turf's quality and durability

However, it's not necessary to pay a high price for a higher decitex rating when the intended use doesn't require it. A balance must be struck between price, density, and use. For sports facilities or public spaces, a higher decitex rating is necessary due to the heavy traffic it will endure. Conversely, for decorative use in gardens or private terraces, artificial grass with a lower decitex rating can be purchased to maintain its softness and appearance.
