The gauge is another very useful technical aspect to consider when choosing and buying artificial turf. It may also be called the gauge by some manufacturers.
What is a galga?
The gauge of artificial turf is the distance between two rows of stitches. This measurement is taken in inches, as it is a term coined by the textile industry, similar to decitex.
The most common gauges for artificial turf are 3/8, 3/4, and 5/8. The gauge used and the type of synthetic turf will determine the appropriate gauge.
The gauge determines the density of artificial turf. A lower gauge means less spacing between the stitches and, therefore, greater density. However, it's not the only factor that affects density, as the thickness of the fibers is also key in determining this characteristic.
How to measure the gauge?

To determine the gauge of artificial turf, it is as simple as taking a ruler and measuring the space between one line of stitches and another.
One inch is equivalent to 25.4 mm. Therefore, if a gauge is 3/8 of an inch, it means that the spacing between the stitches is approximately 9.525 mm.
These calculations allow you to determine how many stitch lines are in one linear meter of the product's width. To do this, divide 1000 mm by the spacing between lines. In the case of a 3/8″ gauge, we already know that the spacing is 9.525 mm, so the result will be approximately 105 stitch lines per meter of width.
| Greyhound | Line spacing | Lines in 1 meter |
|---|---|---|
| 3/8 | 9,525 | 105 |
| 3/4 | 19,050 | 52,5 |
| 5/8 | 15,875 | 63 |

5/8
This measurement is more typical of synthetic turf models for football or other sports use. In these cases, density is not as important since they are filled with elements such as silica sand or rubber.
For example, padel or tennis courts usually have a gauge of 5/8 or 1/2, depending on the bounce and comfort desired.
Football fields are also often installed with synthetic turf with a gauge of 5/8 or 3/4.
Some of the models of decorative artificial grass with this type of gauge are:
| Greyhound | Use |
|---|---|
| 3/8 | Decorative use, residential use, terraces, gardens... |
| 3/4 | Sports fields, playgrounds... |
| 5/8 | Multipurpose use, sports, football... |
How does the greyhound affect artificial turf?
Density
The density of artificial turf is the number of stitches per square meter. To calculate it, we must take into account the gauge and the stitch rate.
However, density also depends on other technical characteristics. For example, the material used for manufacturing, the height of the turf, the thickness of the fibers , and the total weight of the filaments.
This means that finding two identical artificial grass models is virtually impossible. This makes choosing a roll of synthetic turf much more difficult. On our blog, you can find some tips for choosing quality artificial grass.
How is the density of artificial turf calculated?
To calculate the density of an artificial grass surface, we need to know two values: the gauge and the stitch count. Let's take the example of a 3/8 gauge and 18 stitches per 10 cm.
As we saw earlier, 3/8 is equivalent to 0.952 cm, which means that in 100 cm of product there are approximately 105 stitches. If there are 18 stitches in 10 cm of product, then there are 180 stitches in 100 cm. Therefore, in one square meter of product (100 cm x 100 cm) there would be 105 x 180 = 18,900 stitches/m².
Appearance and feel to the touch
Generally, when a turf model has a high density, its appearance is much more uniform and orderly, and its feel is lusher and softer. However, excessive density can also result in a much less realistic appearance. Ideally, you should find a balanced artificial turf model that suits the needs and use of each space.
Other aspects that affect the appearance and feel of synthetic grass are the shape of the filament, the number of stitches, and the weight of the yarn.
