Custom Artificial Grass: How many square meters do I need?

Approximate reading time: 4 minutes, 6 seconds

One of the first questions we are usually asked about Artificial Grass is: "How much does it cost?"

The answer will depend on the size of the installation area

The larger the area, the more materials, time, and labor are needed, so the installation will cost more.

Therefore, the question we should ask ourselves is: "How much will it cost to install artificial grass in MY garden?"

To get an answer, you need to calculate the square meters of ground where you want to install the synthetic grass.

This isn't too complicated, but you will need some tools for the process.

We will teach you step by step how to measure the area and calculate the square meters for your Synthetic Turf Installation

Given the versatility of artificial grass, it can be installed virtually anywhere, meaning your installation area can be of various shapes and sizes. For example, a balcony, the interior of your home, or a traditional backyard.

These are the tools you need to calculate the square meters of artificial grass

What tools do I need to measure artificial grass by cutting?

You will need some tools to help you obtain the most accurate dimensions

  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil or pen
  • Paper
  • Calculator

What should you consider before installing artificial grass by the meter?

Although taking measurements to install artificial grass is simple, you should keep a few things in mind:

  • The width of the artificial grass rolls is 2 meters.
  • When calculating the total amount of rolled turf to buy, you should add 10% more in case of any waste.
  • Artificial grass must always be installed with the grain running in the same direction. If you lay it against the grain, it will lose the natural appearance that characterizes our products. This is why many of the leftover clippings cannot be reused in other areas.
When artificial grass is installed against the grain, different colors are noticeable.
Artificial grass rolls should always face the same direction to look good.

The perfect amount of artificial grass you need, depending on the shape of your garden

You already have the necessary tools and know everything you need to consider. You're ready to find out how many square meters of artificial turf you need!

If you're not sure how to do it, don't worry. We'll guide you and break down each step of the process to calculate the square meters of floor space.

Rectangular and square surfaces

Chart that helps you know how many meters of grass to buy for a rectangular plot

Consider yourself lucky if your surface is rectangular or square, as it's the easiest shape to measure!

Simply measure the length and width of your lawn, as shown in the diagram above.

To calculate the surface area of your rectangular or square artificial grass installation, multiply the length of grass you need by the width

For example, if you have a garden that is 5 m (width) x 5 m (length), you will need 25 m² of plastic turf to cover the area.

For a rectangular lawn measuring 3 m (width) x 5 m (length), you will need 15 m² of artificial grass. Keep in mind, of course, that you will need to round the width or length to the standard 2 m width of artificial grass, and that there will be some leftover pieces. Therefore, even though the surface area is 15 m², you would need approximately two 2 x 5 m pieces (20 m²).

Triangular shaped surfaces

Learn how to calculate the square meters of artificial grass for a triangular plot of land.

To calculate the square meters of a triangular plot of land, you must multiply the base by the height and divide it by two

Measure the base of the surface, and then measure the longest part. For example, it might have a base of 4 m and a length of 6 m.

In this example the total surface area would be 12 m².

Even if your lawn narrows to less than 1 m (a) at the top and 3 m (l) at the shorter side, you should base your calculations on the longest and widest sections. Thus, a lawn 4 m (width) x 6 m (length) will require 24 m² of turf, although some will be left over after mowing.

Remember that grass is directional, so you can't just pile up scraps of material to cover a small area.

Circular surfaces

Measure the surface and calculate how many meters of artificial turf you need for a circular plot of land

Measuring the grass in round areas is surprisingly simple

First, measure the width of the circle's area, and then measure the length, both in meters.

As with rectangular lawns, multiply these two dimensions. For example, if you have a circular area of 3 m (a) and 3 m (l), you will need 9 m² of lawn.

In the case of circular lawns, we will deliver a square or rectangular piece of turf that you will have to cut to shape.

L-shaped surfaces

Easily calculate the square meters of artificial grass needed for an L-shaped space

The simplest way to measure an L-shaped lawn is to divide the surface into two different rectangular sections

First, divide the L-shape into two parts that separate at a right angle. You will end up with two rectangular pieces, which you will need to calculate individually.

For example, the longer part of the L (section one) could measure 3 m (width) x 5 m (length). The second part of the L (section two) is 1.5 m (width) x 2.5 m (length).

This means you will need 15 m² of artificial grass for section one, and 4 m² for section two. Once you have these two measurements, add them together to determine the total amount you need. In this example, you will need 19 m² in total.

Double-check the calculations

Once you have a basic idea of how many square meters of lawn you need, make sure to measure everything again.

The last thing you want is to have miscalculated and pay for a lot of waste or, even worse, not have enough grass and have to gather several clippings or place another order.

Remember to also add the 10% safety margin for artificial grass rolls. For example, if you need 50 m² of synthetic grass in total, you will have to buy 55 m².

Calculating the square meters of your lawn will help you approximate the cost of installing artificial grass.

This price will be approximate, as it will be necessary to add the tools required for installation (glue, joining tape, filler…) and many other factors that may affect the final price.

How to make the most of every meter of your artificial grass roll

Performing the calculations correctly is the most important step, but once you have purchased the artificial turf you should consider other issues to get the most out of it:

  • Before cutting, spread the roll completely over the area, making sure the grass is stretched out.
  • Make marks where you need to make the cuts and check that they are correct before cutting the roll of turf.
